Project Overview
Mount Snow hired Russell Construction Services to manage the construction of their Discovery Center and Restaurant simultaneously on an extremely accelerated "fast track" schedule starting in August 1998, then turning over the new lodge by Thanksgiving and the restaurant addition before Christmas. With initial estimates substantially over budget, we were able to implement our value engineering expertise to reduce building cost by 25-30% without affecting the overall design and function of the buildings. In the midst of a regional building boom, Russell was able to utilize their own forces to perform the concrete, framing, and finish carpentry portions of the restaurant, enabling subcontractors to work double shifts on the larger Discovery Center.

The highly architecturally detailed restaurant incorporated on-site manufactured glue-lam trusses with expansive glass walls to give this facility an open slope-side ambiance. Architectural lighting and rich wood finishes create the elegance needed for the mountain's premier dining spot.

The Discovery Center, acting as a learn-to-ski and snowboard school, is a wood frame building with a structural steel support system. The walk-out basement houses the daycare and Skiwee programs, and the main floor is used for the adult programs. A large cathedral ceiling open area with a massive two story fireplace acts as a meeting place. Also, on the main floor is a ski rental facility and the four small acoustically designed theaters used as teaching aides. The third floor houses operational offices and an intimate lounge.

The successfully completed work at Mount Snow along with larger projects for Okemo and Stratton makes the Russell the leading provider of construction services for ski resorts in Vermont.
